Orono-Veazie water stakeholders: Compliance tests show that the level of haloacetic acids (HAA5) in the MAY 2014 sample from the Memorial Union on the UMaine campus EXCEEDED THE MAXIMUM CONTAMINANT LEVEL SET BY THE EPA! Total THM = 55.9 ppb (maximum contaminant level or MCL is 80 ppb); HAA5 = 61 ppb (MCL is 60 ppb) May 2014 results from the Veazie site are THM 54.8 ppb and HAA5 of 13 ppb. Like THM, HAA5 can form when organic matter in the water is not effectively removed by filtration, and disinfectants (chlorine) react with the organics. Do we have TWO PROBLEMS now - THM in Veazie and HAA5 in Orono? This is one more factor that indicates the need for ADDITIONAL, REPRESENTATIVE AND STATISTICALLY MEANINGFUL TESTING OF MULTIPLE LOCATIONS IN ORONO AND VEAZIE. And then, we should ASK THE WATER DISTRICT TO INVESTIGATE EFFECTIVE FILTRATION before moving ahead with drilling a new well. greenfacts.org/en/water-disinfectants/index.htm#2
