Ouch! We have recently dealt with a number of hindlimb degloving injuries. The commonly affected area below the hock has a very limited cover of soft tissue so there is often exposed cannon bone on presentation. These cases require antibiotics, pain relief and long term bandaging for successful resolution. Potential complications are infection, bone sequestra (exposed bone dies due to lack of blood supply) and proud flesh. All of these can be dealt with by your vet as required. One way we can speed up healing is to use skin grafting techniques-reducing scarring and bandaging!
