Our Beer Baron event is this Saturday afternoon. Phil Nuxhall will be sharing some information about these interesting Barons over the next few days. Thank you Phil - so with a beer twist, we are proud to present... FROM THE HISTORIANS VAULT: CHRISTIAN BOSS, SR. owned the Gambrinus Brewery and Gambrinus Stock Company (first company ever organized in Cincinnati for the purpose of making beer.) He lived at 1324 Broadway until 1879. He was born in Pirmasens, Rhineland Pfalz, Bavaria Germany in 1822. Ten years later, his parents sailed for New Orleans and then to Cincinnati. Christian learned the shipbuilding trade in Cincinnati and became a flatboat man on the Ohio & Mississippi rivers. Boss returned in 1849 to open a grocery store. By 1855, he and noted mathematician David Ray, bought Jonte Brewery. His brewery was the first in Cincinnati to bottle its own beer. Prohibition came along in 1919 and ended his business. In Roman mythology, Gambrinus was the god of beer. He is usually depicted as a jolly king. Boss and his wife, Rosa Aldiner, had 7 children. He was active in contributing horses and wagons to cooperate with the Union army in repelling raiders. Born in Pirmasens, Rhineland Pfalz, Bavaria Germany in 1822 and died at 2401 Ingleside Place. Located in Section 16, Lot 308. - Phillip J. Nuxhall, Historian
