Our Body Can Tell Us What’s Going on with Our Health, But We Need to Know What to Look For! A. Beaman When I first got started on my path to natural healing I was introduced to the Art of Visual Diagnosis by Macrobiotic pioneer, Michio Kushi. I had been diagnosed with “incurable” thyroid disease, and instead of taking the recommended dose of radioactive iodine to destroy my thyroid, I attended a Macrobiotic Conference in Vermont. While there, I learned the basics about food, lifestyle, chewing and the importance of preparing home-cooked meals. It made perfect sense and I was excited to begin my healing journey. At the end of the week, I joined a group diagnosis workshop and counseling session led by Michio. There were about fifty participants in the room, and each of us took a turn sitting up at the front of the class while the master diagnostician worked his craft. He spent just a few moments looking at each of us and then gave feedback. I was amazed at how accurate his assessment was with each person. When it was my turn, I sat beside him. He looked at my eyes and the skin on my face, he touched my swollen neck and goiter, and looked at my hands and fingernails. It took approximately sixty seconds for him to come up with a diagnosis of my condition. He pointed to my neck and said, “Too much frozen dairy.” Wow! That was spot on! At the time of my diagnosis I was eating non-fat frozen yogurt every day. How the heck did he know that? He said, “Thyroid condition can be cured in four months. But, that’s not the biggest problem.” He continued, “If you don’t change your diet and lifestyle right now, you will have breast cancer in both your breasts within five years.” What?! I didn’t come here for a diagnosis of breast cancer! I came for thyroid disease. I was only 28 years old at that time, that means I would have breast cancer by my early 30’s. I was completely shocked! How the heck could he diagnose breast cancer in the future just by looking at me? It was simply amazing, and once again, I believed his diagnosis was correct. From the time I was a teenager, I had experienced deep throbbing pain in both of my breasts during menstruation. Swelling and discomfort may be quite normal around the monthly cycle, but pain can indicate something else. Pain in the body, especially along meridian pathways, can indicate stagnant energy. If the flow of energy is blocked anywhere it can be a warning sign that there is dysfunction in an organ system, and that can lead to a host of problems including the inability to breakdown and discharge cancer cells. Plus, my mom had breast cancer. So his diagnosis was a HUGE wake up call for me. The only thing he didn’t get correct was the timeline for healing my thyroid condition. It didn’t take four months, it took almost two years, but it healed. After my own visual assessment, I became fascinated with the ancient teachings about diagnosis and prevention of disease. I studied visual diagnosis, chakra diagnosis, shiatsu, Chinese medicine, meditation, food and healing, plant medicine, and I even studied at the Kushi Institute with Michio himself. He was a great teacher. Visual diagnosis was the first diagnostic tool I learned. It is an ancient practice used by traditional healers to help discover the strengths and weaknesses, health (or lack of health), within the body. Once awareness of what’s happening inside the body becomes evident by looking at the outside, it can be used to diagnose or prevent an illness from manifesting. You would begin the process of visual diagnosis by looking at the face because it’s the first thing we notice when we meet someone. The face is the sensory center of the body and can tell you almost everything you need to know about a person’s physical and/or emotional condition. The mouth is the entrance to the digestive tract. The nose is the entrance to the respiratory system. The eyes are directly connected to the optic nerve, brain and nervous system. The ears are the auditory system (hearing), and connected to kidney health. For example, when the respiratory system has been attacked by a virus (flu or cold), you can see the internal inflammation manifesting on the outside of body at the nose which is the entranceway to the respiratory system. Even before you start blowing your nose to relieve the buildup of mucus, the nostrils become red, itchy and inflamed. Another example would be someone that has twitching, flitting eyes, or eyes that dart about the room and do not have a steady gaze. This could indicate that person’s nervous system and/or mind is on edge, agitated and certainly not relaxed. The diagnostition’s job is to decipher where energy may be stagnant, excessive, or weak, and offer suggestions to help alleviate the condition. From there, the patient can choose to alter their diet and lifestyle, or not. It’s important to understand that the person diagnosing does not actually heal the patient, but only guides them to an awareness of what may be happening inside their body and mind. No two bodies are exactly alike, not even twins. It’s imperative to approach each person as if exploring new a new terrain and make a note of everything you discover.
