Our Kent Chamber/business community is in partnership with the Kent School District. Read on.... ------------------------- Here are many ways to impact the youth of Kent! They are counting on you..... The Kent Chamber of Commerce and the Kent School District cordially invite you to participate in a few wonderful work experience activities for Kent School District Students that we are coordinating this year! The first work experience activity we are coordinating in is our Annual Middle School Career Fair. This is a great opportunity to give back to the community and invest in future generation and we would appreciate your participation. You will impact over 650 seventh and eighth graders at the 2015 Career Fair. Our goal is to expose them to a variety of future career paths. We believe that the earlier students start to prepare for their future the more successful they will be. This career fair will provide the opportunity for the students to start thinking about their long term goals before they begin high school. The event will take place at Meridian Middle School on January 27th, 2015 from 9 to 11:10 AM. Your participation will involve giving 3 thirty minute presentations on the general information of your work field, as well as the education requirements necessary to pursue that career path. We ask that you commit to all 3 rotations. Your script should have fun and engaging elements to help engage the middle school students in your presentation; think back to when you were 13 years old, what kinds of things captivated you? We want to provide a fun, inspiring, and engaging morning for the children. Our second work experience activity is the Mentoring Program we have in our district through a non-profit organization called Communities in Schools of Kent. This program is very popular among the business community and many businesses allow their employees to step out of the office for 1 hour every week during the school year to attend a mentoring session at one of the Kent School District K-12 schools with the student you will be matched with. If you are interested in learning more about this program, please let me know and I am happy to connect you with Communities in Schools of Kent for more information on the Mentoring Program. This program is wonderful, not only because the employee is allowed to give back to the youth in our community and build a positive, supportive relationship with a young person, but it allows the employee to inform the student about the career and educational pathway theyve pursued and have meaningful conversations pertaining to work-readiness skills with their student weekly! Finally, we are very excited to announce a brand new High School Internship Program that we are coordinating this year in the Kent School District! This is truly a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community and invest in future generations! You will impact over 100 Junior and Senior students by agreeing to host a student intern at your workplace. Our goal is to expose them to a variety of future career paths. We believe that the earlier students start to prepare for their future, the more successful they will be. This Internship Program will provide the opportunity for students to start thinking about their long-term goals and expose them to workplace culture, expectations and responsibilities before they graduate high school. This intentional and impactful program will take place during the students second semester of the 2014-2015 school year (February-June 2015) and will require students to put in 90 unpaid hours at their Internship Site. Students will also be expected to complete classroom work-readiness assignments through a Kent School District Run Classroom. Upon successful completion, each student will earn high school credit as well as invaluable workplace exposure at your place of employment! It is our goal to partner with our local business community to provide a fun, inspiring, and engaging work experience both in and out of the classroom for our youth through this new Internship Program. This program is set up very well and we will give participating employers simple and clear guidelines for hosting and supervising high school interns. If you are interested in taking part in our Internship Program, please let me know so that I can set up some time to meet with you and discuss this program in more detail. I will be contacting you shortly regarding the above opportunities to engage and impact our youth in Kent! Remember, we are only asking for 90 hours of an unpaid internship opportunity, 3 hours of your time at our Annual Career Fair, and/or 1 hour of your time weekly throughout the academic calendar to mentor a student. I hope you will consider getting involved with our local school district and Kent Chamber of Commerce to support our kids in one or a few of the above opportunities. I would be happy to answer any questions regarding any of the above mentioned programs and can be reached via email at [email protected] or by phone at 206-388-7046. I look forward to hearing back from you and partnering with you for our kids sake!
