Our Obsession with Beauty I’m not going to deny that I - TopicsExpress

Our Obsession with Beauty I’m not going to deny that I don’t care about the way I look, or act like I am not like a lot of people, obsessed with celebrities checking the daily mail constantly to see what’s going on in Celebrity land. I love admiring artists like Rihanna showing off her incredible body in a teeny weeny bikini lounging on a luxurious yacht, in fact I think it’s highly entertaining. I am also very guilty of taking Selfie’s and then filtering the shit out of them until I feel confident enough to eventually post them on Instagram. Even when I shop online I’m a little embarrassed to say I will look at the clothes, but mostly at how great the model looks in them. After seeing this, I will want to buy the entire outfit in the hope that I will look slightly more like her. Do you recognize this behaviour? There is no doubt that we all love to watch beautiful people. Science even tells us that physical symmetry, is preferred by humans and animals because it is associated with having a strong immune system, but it seems to me that lately our obsession with beauty is getting a little bit out of hand, and is becoming more and more unhealthy and bad for our self esteem. The things I have been reading about online in the past few months have really shocked me. With people wanting, or admiring things like a Thigh Gap’ (which by the way if you weren’t aware of this is the space between your inner thighs when you stand with your feet together’ ), and is not even physically possible for most people. Lingerie company Bluebella and the website escentual have been taking online surveys, where by they put together the best features of celebrities that where voted the most beautiful to then create the perfect man or women. Which in my opinion always ends up looking like a creepy unattractive lifeless voodoo doll you wanna stab pins and needles in. Why? I’m sorry but this just seems wrong in so many ways, people like this do not exist! Then there are these new apps that are popping up like the The Uglymeter’, where the app will analyze your face to tell you if you’re beautiful or not. In my opinion young girls and teenagers already have enough to deal with in school, worrying about what their peers or love interest might think of them and constantly wondering if they are considered to be ‘pretty’ or not. Do we really need these superficial beauty measuring methods and technology to make them feel less about themselves. God knows nobody looks good in puberty and if you did, then you my friend are a freak of nature and I congratulate you. I’m sure you have all seen the movie ‘Mean Girls’. If you have, you will remember the popular girl in High school that was considered to be the most beautiful ‘Regina George’. You know that famous scene right at the end where the whole school confesses to her that they hate her because of the way she treats others. What I am trying to say is that at the end of it all it’s your personality that is going to make you stand out in a world full of manufactured fake beauty. Wouldn’t you rather go through life embracing and accepting your flaws then spending all of your time wanting to be the most beautiful person and putting others down to make you feel better? X Esmee
