AESOPS FABLES: THE ROOSTER AND THE FOX` A fox heard a rooster crowing, he found it perched in a tree out of reach and asked it to come down for a chat. The rooster was suspicious and replied, “I dare not because there are many animals that like to have me for breakfast.” “You mean you haven’t heard the news,” the fox said excitedly. “All the animals have agreed to live together in peace. Nobody will hurt you now.” The rooster wanted to believe the fox but was skeptical that such a starling development could take place without his knowledge. He craned his neck looking at the horizon and said, “It seems we are about to have company.” “A pack of hounds is coming this way.” “Please excuse me,” the fox said anxiously, “but I need to tend to something in my den.” The rooster replied, “Please don’t go! I was just about to come down to talk to you and the dogs about this remarkable peace plan.” “It might just be possible,” the fox said as she scampered away, “that the hounds haven’t yet heard of the peace plan.” AESOPS MORAL: The worst liars often get tangled in their own lies. In business, therefore it is just as important to listen to your inner voice as it is to take practical steps to verify the authenticity of the information you have heard. According to Dr. Oren Harari, a bestselling business author, “the effective leader looks hard at the evidence that’s being presented by the people under his or her command, and ruins a gut check.” Some questions you should ask yourself in the process of verifying information include: 1. Do I believe what I’m hearing? Do I trust my source? 2. By what means did I get the information? 3. How do I usually get information at work? 4. From whom do I usually get information? 5. Have my sources ever been wrong? Read More 1. Aesop and the CEO: Powerful Business Insights from Aesops Ancient Fables by David Noonan, ©Thomas Nelson Inc. © softskills Ltd. 2013
