Some people asked me to share with them the letter I read at Devin Nwanagus service. I met Dev over 20 years ago when she spread a rumor about me liking a boy and we have been best friends ever since. She always called me Juls, and spelled it without an e. Dear the Perfect Child, When my dad gave you that nickname 16 years ago I was always a little confused- did he know all of the things we did? You owned that nickname though and you made sure that Greg, Suzanne, and I knew just where we stood in the family- having my parents take just you out to dinner. It didnt take me long to realize that my dad understood the importance of our friendship and knew you would be the perfect friend for me. You gently, well lets be honest, aggressively pushed me outside of my comfort zone and supported me the entire way through, welllllll, except for that one time you let me fend for myself with the cops. Despite us being almost complete opposites, you always let me be me and you loved me unconditionally- you have changed my life. All those years ago, I knew you completed our family. I cherish all of our memories together from water balloon fights, every single summer day, to family chores and then punishments for not doing the chores, so much soccer with CRU, eating goldfish and watching Rush Hour on repeat and endless amounts of SVU, tattoos to celebrate 18...and 23, educational adventures planned by your mom, college visits, and so much more. I feel so lucky to have known you for more than 20 years, to have watched you grow into a fierce, intelligent, and compassionate woman with a smile that lit up the world, and jokes that always made me laugh either at or with you. Woman, I want you to know that you are so much more like your mom than you ever thought- you look like her, you talk like her, and you make the same facial expressions, and you are lucky for it. I will think of you each time I go dancing, hear Destinys Child, eat hot dogs, and take risks in life to be happier. Young Nwanagu, you are loved. Love always, Juls
