Our Throwback Thursday post takes us back to 1936, after Harry had been Senator for about a year. Bess did not enjoy being in Washington, D.C., and would spend a good portion of the year in Independence. Harry expected her to be arriving in January 1936, but a sick family member kept Bess at home. Harry wrote this rather despondent letter to Bess, saying, “Well I haven’t been so disappointed since I lost the 1924 election. I don’t believe I will be again for a long time. I wanted you to come so badly in the morning.” We are continually adding more letters from Harry to Bess to our website – be sure to check back frequently!
