Our colleagues in Adamawa state have just exercised one of the constitutional functions of a legislative house though with mixed feelings from our political gladiators. I monitored the process from day one and am happy that unlike before the constitutional provisions were complied with and I got amused with the comments of some opposition members. We need to remind ourselves that Senator Iyiola Omisore, Bucknor Akerele and Olufemi Pedro were removed from their positions as deputy Governor to Chief Bisi Akande and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu through impeachment processes even Gov Fasola was threatened with impeachment just to whip him to line by the power that be. . . So whats the cries about? Legislators are so powerful, the power over public funds, power of appropriation, oversight functions, law making , power to summon anybody while carrying out investigation and power of impeachment among others but we have allowed ourselves to be reduced to mere appendages of the executives either through imposition of weak leadership or our selfish interest over and above public interest. The resultant effect therefore is unguarded executive recklessness. Our Governors have turned themselves to thin god, they remove elected lg officials arbitrarily, sponsor suspension of fellow lawmakers, violates existing laws, impose laws on the public, spending outside budgetry provision, selective implementation of appropriation laws n other laws. To say the least, some of the executive members that have passed through legislative houses also commit these blunder. How can we explain a situation where laws that affects lawmakers are not also implemented, running cost of legislative house deliberately withhold for months just to make them powerless or call them to order, zero implementation of capital votes approved in Budget yet we turned ourselves to executive mouth piece, praise singers over things that will never last. Our democracy can only work where rule of law, separation of power and checks and balances are made to prevail. A situation whereby lawmakers were mobilised by our Govs to move against a constitutional amendment that will give financial autonomy to legislative houses and they get succeeded is a threat to our democracy. Our Judiciary are not left out in this dictates by our executives. In some states they even remove with the support of the legislators Judges that fail to dance to their tune. I take solace in the fact that we are not there yet but we are getting there. The recent ruling by the Supreme court barring all Govs from removing or suspending elected local govt officials is a good omen for our democracy and the on going constitutional amendment when finally concluded will reshape our dear country for better. God bless our Dear Country.
