“Our community is disappearing.” UPSHIFTers from Rahovec’s non-majority groups explain that, in the face of the many challenges facing their community—including social exclusion, a lack of academic opportunity, and high unemployment—youth often see no alternative but to leave their homes and families behind and seek opportunity elsewhere, damaging the fabric of their close-knit community. Hope, they worry, is fading. “There are no choices. Youth don’t even have a place to spend time—they’re out in the street, on their phones. There are no alternatives.” The team hopes to create a network of young people with similar experiences in towns and villages across the region, to share opportunities and mobilize impacted youth to work together for alternatives.
