Our country is afraid of those who are different, wrote Anastasia - TopicsExpress

Our country is afraid of those who are different, wrote Anastasia Nikolaeva, 18, a lesbian who lives in St. Petersburg. Such is the case with the world. To be and identify as a queer person is to have an existence that is political, challenging, cathartic and one that demands integrity and deep self reflection. Queer people find ways to survive in hegemonic societies and often times have their voices silenced or are under represented or misrepresented in mainstream media & films. To exist, to express your thoughts and to be proud in spite of what dominant culture may dictate to you may seem absurd but it is these acts of courage and self expression and self love that liberate yourself and others in doing so. If we learn anything from hatred and oppression it should be that we owe to each other to be empathetic and compassionate.
