Our cultures reaction to autism is so strange. Real scenario that happens all the time: Two children have the exact same non-life-threatening condition. The condition is not inherently painful or inherently distressing. It is not a disease. It does not affect life expectancy or have any life-threatening consequences. Child #1s family reacts to this condition with a series of treatments, including extremely restrictive diets, dangerous and unproven blood purification techniques based in medieval science, abusive therapies that involve restraining the child against his will, and belief in bizarre conspiracy theories that blame science and the government for a condition that most experts agree is genetic. Child #2s family reacts to the condition by pursuing only evidence-based treatments designed to improve the childs quality of life. They dont push or force anything for the sake of conformity or their own convenience. They make the childs happiness their main priority and dont view their child as damaged or defective. Guess which childs family is considered radical by the vast majority of parents? That would be #2. Subjecting your child to torture because hes different = totally expected. Loving your child exactly the way he is = radical. Something is wrong here.
