Our final Youth of the Year nominee is Essence Wright. Essence is a seventeen year old senior at Lely High School whose favorite subjects in school are English, Art and especially Debate, where she has learned debating skills and how to use body language, voice and content. Essence also loves to draw and designed a poster for Boys & Girls Club Week. Essence joined the Club in 2012 and at first was afraid of meeting new people. She says, “People here are nothing like I expected, I have such a support group now. The Boys & Girls Club has me on a path which is going in the right direction.” At the Club, she learned not to allow fear to hold her back and she loves to laugh and smile. She says “The more you smile, the younger you’ll get.” Good advice from this mature, confident young lady! Her favorite Club activities are Teen Talk and Art. She also received special recognition in the Crowning Daughters of Success program. This past year, Essence earned her first job as an intern at a local childrens museum. The experience taught her what to expect and essential skills needed for today’s job market including: how to apply for a job, write a resume, interview, workplace operating procedures and museum job shadowing. She was delighted to earn her first paycheck and loved working with the kids. Essence is a first grade volunteer and does an excellent job managing the group, assisting in carrying out lesson plans, and being a positive role model for the younger members. She knows she wants to be a teacher and be around kids in elementary school, especially kindergarten. Essence has excellent people and public speaking skills, both great assets for her future. She likes working with different personalities and plans to attend college because she knows she is capable of doing something to help the community.
