Our former director Sebastiaan Hesselink recently visited a beautiful new museum in Langres, France, devoted to the encyclopedist Denis Diderot who was born in Langres in 1713. Heres what he says about it: I always love the way France honours its great men and women. This beautiful place was no exception! La Maison des Lumieres Denis Diderot opened last year celebrating the memory of the most important philosopher of the Radical Enlightenment. The visit was an unexpected surprise and a treat to the mind and the eye. And, o yes, they also exhibit the finest set of the Encyclopedie I have ever seen, put in a kind of time line so you can see hoe the workshop progressed from 1752 to 1772. Hè designed the layout of his books often himself including the Encyclopedie. One of his statements was: In typography and printing all forms of art come together! This is the the only Museum exclusively to Diderot and all his achievments. Well worth a visit! More information here: langres.fr/la-maison-des-lumieres-denis-diderot-174 (Of course, in French only)
