Our friend Chris Stearns (R-VA) reports on a few of his takeaways from the RNC summer meeting. As I was standing alone (or at least felt like it) at the Republican National Committee meeting, I ultimately had two big takeaways... 1. While the original intent and purpose of the RNC was to elect a Republican president, its transformed into something much different (obviously). The RNC is something akin a big-government political apparatus that threatens to defund states that buck leadership. The dispersement of several hundred thousand dollars from the 7th District Committee makes a lot more sense... 2. Virginia is exceptionally fortunate to have such an independent and sovereign Republican organization. As far as I know, we are the only territory in the United States that has local, grassroots autonomy and authority to select how we nominate candidates (mass meetings, canvasses, conventions and primaries). All of the other states generally operate under the guidelines of their state governments, whereas we have virtually raw freedom of association. If only other states could adopt a party structure like ours, perhaps we would have a much more grassroots-oriented party at the national level. Ill have more to come over the next few days... I wish I could/would have done more to help move the ball in a more grassroots-friendly direction, but its like talking to a brick wall with these folks...! Thanks again for everyones support!
