Our friend Utku Kali was arrested on May 24, 2013 while doing his military service at the Amasya Military Police Command Post in Turkey. He was accused of leaking certain confidential documents on the explosion which took place in Reyhanlı on May 11 to a group of hackers under the name Redhack. These allegations were immediately taken as truth, to the point that on May 23 –that is the day before Utku’s appearance in court- government officials were on television stating that Utku was guilty. In the meanwhile in social and printed media, Utku had already been made a hero –one who was unafraid of unleashing the truth. He was turned into a political figure, with no questioning of his role in the incident, with no thought given to whether or not he was actually responsible for the leak. Yet our friend Utku is not a document leaker, not a criminal. Nor is he a hero. His only tie to the entire event is that at the time of the leak he was present at the related unit of the Amasya Military Police Command Post. It seems obvious that there is a serious communication problem between the different intelligence agencies of the government and Utku is the scapecoat chosen to help cover it. The weight of the mistakes by government intelligence agencies are placed on the shoulders of an ordinary person like Utku. Having worked in the IT department of a GSM company before starting his military service, Utku was a perfect fit for such an accusation and the propaganda which followed. Utku Kali was arrested with no evidence against him and accused directly by government officials of sending the documents in question to the group named Redhack.
