Our guest speaker this week is award-winning, Ghanaian-Kenyan film maker and stage actress, Hawa Essuman. Ms Essuman is best known for directing drama film Soul Boy (2010), written by Kenyan author Billy Kahora. Soul Boy, Ms Essumans film directorial debut, has won many awards, including:Dioraphte Audience Award, International Film Festival Rotterdam Veto Award, Afrika-Filmfestival, Leuven, Belgium Signis Award, Zanzibar International Film Festival, Zanzibar, Tanzania Polish Filmmakers Association Award, Ale Kino!, Poznan, PolandBest Short Film, Best Lead Actor, Best Scriptwriter at Kenyas Kalasha AwardsBest Actor and Best East African Film at the Kenya International Film Festival. The film has been shown at numerous film festivals around the world, including FESPACO in Burkina Faso and the Gothenburg and Berlin film festivals. Also in 2012, Ms Essuman received the Directors Eye, a 25,000-Euro bursary to fund her most recent film project entitled Djin (The Winds of Destiny). Djin is a narration of the history of a Kenyan coastal village, reigned over by tradition and mythology, as it transitions into modernity. Ms Essuman will speak to us about her work, why she chose this specific art form, film and how she would like to see it evolve.
