Our kids were raised to say please and thank you, starting about - TopicsExpress

Our kids were raised to say please and thank you, starting about ten minutes after they learned to talk. Mostly because social contract, but also because it cracks me up when toddlers say pweeze and tank ooo. But, as with dogs, their training must be reinforced. So when I offered my son a cup of Flanders cocoa (more on that another day) while he was doing his homework, his absent, Yeah, didnt get the job done. Excuse me? Everyone with a parent knows that tone. Sorry, I meant yes, please. I muttered and grumbled while fixing his cocoa. When I brought it, he thanked me and added, You should just assume that when I say yes, that means yes please. Fortunately Id handed off the beverage, or Id have been laughing so hard I would have dumped scalding liquid all over myself. Ah, no. Yes, please means yes, please. Got it? Youre too old to have to be reminded of basic good manners. Next time you forget, itll be like Im just taking a poll, guaging your interest in a treat but not actually providing said treat. I left, and heard his faint mutter, grumble…can do with your poll…grumble… Excuse me? Nothing! Nothing, heh, mutter mutter I invented that, you little punk, cant fool me with your grumble mutter… Excuse me? Nothing! Yikes. He almost caught me. Better have a cup of hot chocolate to soothe my nerves. Im pretty sure I won that round. Pretty sure. Who cares? Hot chocolate!
