Our late thangka master Tenchoe la, as he was affectionately - TopicsExpress

Our late thangka master Tenchoe la, as he was affectionately called. His contribution to Norbulingka was immeasurable. Not only was he a master of thangka painting, but he also had the opportunity as a youngster in Tibet to study tailoring under the 13th Dalai Lamas master tailor, and so was skilled at stitching as well. Traditionally, thangka appliqués were the work of two sets of artists. First designed by thangka painters with their vast knowledge of Buddhist iconography, they were then stitched by tailors who were experts at sewing, but had little knowledge of the sacred proportions of Buddhist deities. Tenchoe la, with his unique knowledge of both arts was able to bridge the gap between the two, thus creating a new tradition of specialized thangka appliqué artists. Our largest thangka appliqué created to date is over 30 ft high and hangs in the Norbulingka temple.
