Our new Project Leader Spotlight will feature one of our newest employees, Joey Guerin. Joey is the Special Projects Program Manager for HOBA. Welcome, Joey! Whats your favorite HOBA project? My introduction to HandsOn Bay area was initially as one of the calendar community volunteers. I had just relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area from Philadelphia, PA and was attracted to the program as a way to better acquaint myself with the local nonprofit sector and meet some new people. My first project was with the needle exchange program at the San Francisco Aids Foundation. Walking in, you could instantly sense a warm community feeling made up of enthusiastic volunteers ready to work. Our project leader was happy to teach us about the work of the Foundation while still being mindful of our time and the efficiency of our work. The program was well thought out and executed wonderfully, in a way that engaged volunteers on a higher level than most volunteer programs I’ve participated in. Why did you become a Project Leader? Volunteer service has always had a strong presence in my life. Service-learning was regularly integrated into the curriculum of my K-12 Quaker education, which inspired me to continue to seek out opportunities throughout college and my post-graduate career. Upon my relocation to the Bay Area, I knew just a handful of friends and acquaintances that were gracious enough to help orient me to the area, but I had a very small professional network to help get me off the ground and get back into the volunteering world. It was my goal to build off the nonprofit career I began in Philly, working as a community coordinator for the skills-based volunteer programs of the Arts & Business Council of Greater Philadelphia. In this role, I was privileged to facilitate new partnerships between corporate volunteers and local arts and culture nonprofits, for a mutually beneficial volunteer experience. I particularly liked the versatility the position offered, to be able to lend a helping hand to so many different nonprofits with different missions and goals to better their respective communities. I am grateful to be able to join the team at HandsOn Bay Area and to continue along this path, connecting people across community lines in a meaningful and effective way. What do you do when you’re not leading volunteer projects? I am a big fan of the performing arts. There is a very unique exchange of ideas that occurs in artistic expression that can often have a much farther reach than everyday conversation has on the general public; it leaves a longer-lasting impression on everyone who interacts with it, as well. I love making music, going to shows, and seeing new artists from all different backgrounds contribute to their world through different mediums. Haikus or sonnets? Haikus are better than Sonnets Theyre short, sweet, and fun to recite That is all for now Vinyl or mp3? Vinyl, because you cant unearth subliminal messages from the beyond by playing an mp3 backwards. Burritos or Tacos? Burritos, because they are easier to eat while being chased. Dragons or Unicorns? Unicorns, for fear of being lit on fire by the breath (!!!) of another creature. Welcome, Joey! You already fit right in! #winwin
