Our post-bike tour with VBT consisted of four of us independently arranging for a "Team Vulcan" adventure: Mt. Etna (above Catania) and Stromboli (a two-hour hydrofoil ride to the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the north coast of Sicily). Awesome! Guide Duardo on Etna informed us of many interesting attributes--including underground Lava Tubes. Stromboli guide Mario led us to the top in a very arduous and hot climb followed by a grueling and a head lamp-lit, long and steep downhill in deep sand... and enough dust so that even our dust masks were insufficient. Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. We were treated to some awesome pyrotechnics at the top, not more than a couple of hundred yards away!
