Our problem with Shark Week is that Discovery does nothing to get its viewers to care about sharks or realize that their extinction a very real possibility. Their programming is mostly about sharks as monsters that attack people, so it makes sense that idiot Americans would want to eat more shark after seeing Shark Week. I think its just a sad commentary on American culture as a whole to see how far Discovery Channel has slipped from its original aim of being a network devoted to science, the wonder of nature, education and, well, discovery, to the morass of white-trash reality and sensationalism that it has become.
