Our proclivity to justify ourselves is extraordinary. We know what we know, think what we think, feel what we feel – and it all makes perfect and honorable sense. The problem is that our penchant for self-justification is well matched to our likelihood of being dead wrong (or more commonly, not entirely right). “I like to be right” marries “I’m likely half-wrong at best,” producing a progeny of vitriolic, high-horsey fools. When I say, “vitriolic, high-horsey fools,” I mean us. What are the antidotes? Kindness. Humility. A sober self-assessment and repentant heart. Gratitude. Willingness to receive new insight. A contrite heart. Joy. Psalm 51:17.
