Our response to media speculation in relation to our reported approval of an anti-independence Orange march Superintendent Matt Richards, of Police Scotland, has issued the following statement to clarify the procedures and considerations applied in respect of any application to hold a march or rally: Police Scotland neither authorises nor refuses any application to hold a march or rally. The police are asked to provide any information that we are aware of that might affect our ability to facilitate such an event or any issues relating to crime and disorder and public safety. When there is no such information or intelligence to suggest that we cannot facilitate the event and ensure the safety of the public, then there is no reason to raise any objection. On this occasion Police Scotland raised no objections but asked the Licensing Sub-Committee to consider attaching a number of conditions if the march is approved, as is common practice. Formal representation will be made to the Licensing Sub-Committee on Tuesday 22nd July. The decision to allow the march to go ahead lies ultimately with them.
