Our shelter will experience a transition on January 2nd, when our tireless and dedicated director Kayla Smith will leave us to move to Charlotte, where her fiancé lives. We wish her well and send her our gratitude and thanks for a job very well done. The shelter has placed an increased number of animals under her leadership, plus we have updated the play area for dogs and another inside area for cats. She and Bill Cerase, our assistant director, finished a new storage area for food and are currently working on updating our dogs runs, as our building (formerly a vet clinic) is over 50 years old. She has assisted in many fundraisers, and represented us at community outreach programs during her time as director. She is leaving the shelter in very capable hands of Bill Cerase, who has been involved in the shelter for several years. He first started volunteering, holding down Sunday morning duties, then joined our Board. He has been our indispensable assistant direct for nearly two years; we know the transition to his leadership will be seamless.
