Today, the Clay County Democratic Party has condemned the Clay County Board of Commissioners decision to use taxpayer money in an attempt to defend against a lawsuit brought by the Clay County School Board. “It is unconscionable that the members of the Board of Commissioners who voted to delay the School Board referendum until 2016 have decided to move forward and hire an outside attorney to defend a lawsuit. The School Board would not initiate litigation if the commissioners followed the advice of the county attorney and passed the referendum on for a vote November 4” states Tom Nazworth, Chair of the Clay Democratic Party. Three commissioners are unnecessarily spending Clay taxpayers’ money to defend an untenable position.” “Simply follow the law and place it (the referendum) on the November ballot. It’s that simple. Allow the residents of the county to decide how the school superintendent will be chosen. The will of the people takes precedence over everything else.” said Nazworth. “The County Commissioners should not force taxpayers to foot the bill for any lawyers to litigate this lawsuit.
