Our thoughts and beliefs create panic attacks Our thoughts are the trigger the starts a panic attack. When we have thoughts our brain deems scary, in an effort to protect us our innate protection system, fight-or-flight response, is activated. Out fight-or-flight response is meant to protect us by releasing adrenalin into our blood stream to give us the ability to either combat or flee a situation our brain has determined threatening. Our brain make the determination whether a thought, situation, or circumstance is threating based on our individual belief system. If we both see a spider and I have the belief that spiders are scary and you don’t, then my fear response is activated and yours isn’t. Sometimes our belief systems gets filled with things our brain deems scary, which is all based on interpretation, and may not always be correct. If our belief system contains the beliefs that airplanes, traffic, elevators, social situations, animals and many other circumstances are scary, then whenever we encounter these situations, or even thoughts of them trigger our panic. It’s our repeated scary thoughts, that causes repeated activation of our fear response, that flood us with adrenalin and causes the panic attack. Learn to stop the scary thoughts and you stop activating your fear response. Learn to change your belief system and you overcome your panic disorder. ~ Beyond Anxiety
