Our tolerance for this sort of thing used to astonish me. Then BP - TopicsExpress

Our tolerance for this sort of thing used to astonish me. Then BP poisoned the entire Gulf of Mexico, and no one went to jail, or even to trial, and everyone agreed to pretend that it didnt happen. There have been such disasters ever since the dawn of industrial civilization - and I say disasters because such events are the inevitable byproduct of this cultures way of life - but the Deepwater Horizon oil spill was my own personal time of realization. In a just and sane culture, such a cataclysm would have resulted in some intense reappraisal and self-examination, and a realization that our dependence upon fossil fuels has only one end, which is the poisoning of the very matrix of this planets life. Obviously, that didnt happen. The reasons for this incomprehensible indifference I still dont fully grasp, but it seems pretty obvious that 1) crude oil spills and explosions will continue to occur in this country, probably with increasing frequency now that were drilling even more, and that 2) very few people will stir themselves in any kind of protest before going back to whatever television show is popular at the moment, even if their own water is poisoned.
