Our young people are struggling to cope and too many are choosing - TopicsExpress

Our young people are struggling to cope and too many are choosing the path of no return. As Henare OKeefe says Its a nationwide issue. A burden shared is a burden halved. Dont bundle it up inside - its okay to ask for help. I remain vigilant in terms of my own son... I will always be there for him and I will tell him as often as I can how much I love him and how much I care about him. The past two years have been a real roller-coaster ride for me and the family... as we watch him lurch from mistake after mistake... and then pay the price of his bad decisions. But I remain staunch and will not forsake him. What he... and many other young people need is positive feedback... and confirmation of their skills and achievements. Not to be reminded of their mistakes or embarrassed by their past behavior. If the only feedback he gets is from those on a similar path... then he will remain on that path too. But if we can encourage them to follow another path... paths they enjoy or excel at... like sport... or kapa-haka... or art... or music (we aint all academics) then we can start to offer positive and constructive feedback. Then perhaps... they will realize that they are important... they do have opportunities... and society does care. I know I care... our rangatahi need us... and we need them...
