Out beyond ideas of right and wrong, there is a field. Ill meet you there. Rumi When I was a kid, I was average in popularity & in most sports mediocre at best.. So I had to find something else to be good at. And I chose to be good at knowing stuff. Now, theres nothing wrong with knowing stuff. Its actually very helpful, but if your self-image and self-esteem is all wrapped up in being right about the answers, youve got a problem. I lived for a long time in that illusion of being the guy who always knew the answers, until life served me up some major disruptions. Then I became teachable. Some of my right answers turned out to be wrong. And I noticed how my need to be right was making relationships with others difficult. Somewhere in there I first saw that Rumi quote, and I recognized that it had the formula for right relationships. My new mantra became, Thats interesting! Tell me more. And from that I learned something very important. It didnt matter if people were right or wrong. They didnt care if I agreed with them or not. They were just grateful for someone to listen to them, so they could be heard! And thats what Rumi means by his field out there beyond right and wrong. A place where you can be heard, without argument or conflict. If you can provide that space for others, theyll appreciate it. Perhaps theyll provide that for you. Be Blessed!
