Out of a sound sleep I come awake with nearly every hair on my back and neck standing up being supported by goose bumps. I have heard coyotes and even wolves before but they were outside. This is in our house, in fact in our bedroom. What the. . . .? In the bottom of our large closet opposite our bed I see Winston clumber slightly stirring and the most eerie howl emanating from his body. My God it is what I call THE FERRAL HOWL. He is in his own dream world but where is that? Is he running free with wolves, jumping windfalls or is he hunting pheasants through deep grass? Come back, bird, I only want to be your friend. There is not a mean bone in his body and he loves all things. Not so the girl clumbers. He loves our cat, he loves all dogs, he is best friends to all creatures. As he gets older he gets sweeter and kinder. There are 3 1/2 howls. The 1/2 howl is the one that wakes even him up. He looks over at me and I can tell he is embarrassed, as much as a clumber can be embarrassed. Sorry mom, I did not mean to wake you. I was having such a good dream. Now if we could only share that dream and I could easily fall easily back to sleep, that would be a good thing. He is easily pleased and made happy. Winstons rewards are whole turnips which he loves. They are right up there with raw green tripe. He will easily eat his suppers but his first love is always turnips. Maybe they cause the dreams who knows? He can carry off a whole colander of turnip peels with a smile and a glow. He is the sweetest clumber ever and easily made happy. If we could share his dream and maybe I could fall back asleep. His tail thumbs softly on his bed. He will quickly fall back asleep while I will lay awake pondering the clumber mind.
