Out of the 44 currently serving ambassadors and high commissioners, 27 (60%) are political appointees, and have never worked in the Sri Lanka Foreign Service. Five of them are former service commanders, three of them are former politicians. The key diplomatic missions of United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany and Japan, all have political appointees. Among the weird appointments are Raja Edisuriya (Ambassador to Brazil - Former Head of Mihin Air), Sarath Kongahage (Ambassador to Germany - Former UNP Parliamentarian and now giving his backside to Mahinda), Nawalage Bennett Cooray (Ambassador to Italy - Former Provincial Councillor, lost elections), and A.S.P. Liyanage (Ambassador to Italy - Real Estate Businessmen of ASP Group fame). Three, as far as I know, are also not citizens of Sri Lanka. Jaliya Wickremasinghe (Ambassador to United States - US Citizen and cousin of Mahinda), Dr. Christopher Nonis (High Commissioner to United Kingdom - British Citizen) and Dr. Palitha Kohona (Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York - Australian Citizen).
