Out with the old... these partly rotten floorboards were lined with newspaper from the late 1940s. German soldiers were billeted in this room during the Second World War so there might have been some redecorating to do. Below, the archway almost entirely buried in the cellar is two floors below street level, so perhaps 12th or 13th century. A secret tunnel for religious minorities (Cathars, Huguenots) to escape persecution?
