Outer Banks History Center Receives Unique Donation MANTEO — The Outer Banks History Center in Manteo has received a one-of-a-kind donation of hand drawn maps of the Currituck Shooting Club property at Poyner Hill on the Currituck Banks. The donation, given by an anonymous donor, belonged to Murray J. Chappell, Sr., the superintendent of the hunt club from 1959 to 1977. The collection contains 32 hand-drawn color maps created by Chappell and features the ponds, creeks and duck blind locations. They even show the best wind direction for hunting in each section. “The history of the hunt clubs in our region is a popular topic with a broad audience,” said Curator and Site Manager KaeLi Schurr of the donation. “This collection is exceptional in that it adds heretofore undocumented detail to our understanding of this topic. We depend on our regional community to continually build our collections and are so grateful to be entrusted with stewardship of materials of such import.” The maps were given in memory of Chappell and in honor of Dare County retired political leaders Robert V. Owens, Jr. and Marc Basnight, who were instrumental in steering the donor to the center. The collection has been deposited at the Conservation Lab of the N.C. Division of Archives and Records in Raleigh, where the maps will be removed from the deteriorating acidic photographic album in which they were stored and will receive any necessary conservation treatment before being housed in proper archival enclosures. They will then be returned to the Outer Banks History Center. The Outer Banks History Center is a regional archives and research library administered by the State Archives of North Carolina, Department of Cultural Resources. It is open to the public and is located across from the Manteo, N.C. waterfront at Roanoke Island Festival Park. The reading room is open Monday through Friday and the History Center Gallery is open daily.
