Outsourcing to Sarajevo 2014 A large scale outdoor public sculpture and exhibition platform for the 2014 Centennial, Sarajevo. Court Yard of the National Museum. In 2012 Alexander Viscio, an American artist from NYC, was invited as an Artist in Residence to Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina. There he did his first large-scale public outdoor sculpture titled, “Occupy AIR”. The sculpture was a modified version of the word Occupy designed as an installation and performance platform where he invited 180 citizens of Tuzla to enter the sculpture. The piece commemorated the 20th anniversary of the war in that region. And after seeing thousands of names etched in stone of those who died in the war, the citizens inside the sculpture wrote their names on the interior walls creating a living monument to life. Youtube video link: youtu.be/4kY9kCwtOVY.webloc Now the artist has been chosen by the BMUKK/Österreich to represent Austria at the 2014 Centennial in Sarajevo. There he will build his second large-scale outdoor sculpture in the form of the word Outsourcing designed by the artist as an exhibition and performance platform where he hired the Sarajevan architect Emir Salkic to over see the actual fabrication. The sculpture at 20 meters long, 6 meters wide and 2 meters high without a roof, will be lipstick Red on the outside and on the inside, 7 Austrian artists, 6 from the BiH region and one representing France will have images of their work wall papered onto the entire interior wall space. On the floor will be an Austrian artist who designed a graphic pattern configured from the German children’s game “Trouble”. The only objects in the exhibition (inside the word Outsourcing) will be the guests who come and view the exhibition thereby adding to the content of the sculpture and step on the circled patterns on the floor of the game “Trouble”. The word “Outsourcing” itself is from the series of works the artist call, “Dirty Words from America”. Built in wood they range in size from 100cm wide to almost 2 meters and are mounted on the wall. In Sarajevo, the word Outsourcing will be 20 times the size and having negative connotations in global economic circles, will be liberated into a positive visual/physical experience. And though it opens on the 100th anniversary of the assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand, it operates not as a political tool of commemoration but more as a contemporary Trojan horse in celebration of where Sarajevo is now. When asked by the curator Karin Zimmer of the BMUKK what will he be outsourcing, Alexander responded, “it is Austria that is outsourcing me for the job and I’m outsourcing the content of the work to 14 artists”. alexanderviscio
