Over exercising is not the answer to true wellness: Chronic cardio is associated with chronically high levels of cortisol. Cortisol is a stress hormone, a hormone we couldn’t live without. In fact, today you can live without most any other hormone, but cortisol is absolutely required. Cortisol is released during times of stress. In past times, such stress would be getting chased by a lion, or conversely, chasing a lion away. Most stress in the past was short lived, thus the cortisol turned off as fast as it turned on. Today, we have stress in our lives that our ancestors couldn’t have imagined and the amount of cortisol our bodies produce is enormous. Cortisol is necessary to keep us from going into shock, to reduce inflammation, to improve immunity during times of stress, and to help us think clearly when our life is on the line. However, too much cortisol is associated with increased visceral fat, heart disease, diabetes, sleep disorders, and whole host of other problems. Short bouts of exercise with high intensity interval training as well as just moving and playing is the key.
