Over the last 18mths or so ive been working towards expressing a view of what i think Bodhrán playing should be about and why i feel you cant just view it as another drum to be played no matter how skillful you might be and regardless of how many books you may have read or papers you may have written....or just add it to a long list of other drums you play and then tonight im listening to a group no instruments just the power and beauty of the human voice Its right there to be seen heard and felt in the music and yes its magically skillful but its matched note for beat with pure heart the rhythm and melody are indistinguishable from eachother so where one ends and the other begins is blurred into one amazing mural of sound. Bodhrán is so tactile and mood sensitive it can convey human emotion and imprint that into the melody as a whole. To do this you have to be a part of that music to begin with, its not about being a metronome or being the heartbeat of the music, thats already there, it doesnt need us to give it CPR. That music has to be the first and last thoughts you have picking up and putting down a tipper and every thought in-between belongs to that music untill like the voices forming this song where one ends and the other begins is only felt in the heart....reach that point and ill call you a Bodhrán player https://youtube/watch?v=erZN-yCyOP8
