Over the last few days, two young Palestinian men were given summonses from the Israeli police for interrogation, after being detained while passing through one of the numerous checkpoints in al-Khalil (Hebron). On the 18th of January Israeli soldiers and border police detained a young man at Shuhada checkpoint. They kept him at the checkpoint even after he was visibly ill and shaking, experiencing what appeared to be a panic attack. After about half an hour he was taken to an ambulance after collapsing on Shuhada street. One Palestinian explained to ISM volunteers that the young man and his family feared that this kind of summons could lead to his prolonged disappearance into the Israeli militarys harsh interrogation and prison system. Later, on the evening of January 20th, 22-year-old Hamam Abdelrauf Azara was detained for about an hour and moved to a different checkpoint in Tel Rumeida before Israeli police arrived to deliver another paper summons. After the police had left, Hamam told those present that he did not understand why he had been detained, as he had a clean record and had never been in prison. He said the police told him that the summons had come from the Shabak.
