Over the last few months, and again today, éirígí has been approached by residents in the Clonard area, and particularly Ross Mill and surrounding streets, about high levels of car crime. Residents are reporting vehicles being broken into and theft of goods. Several residents have reported the issue to the PSNI who, whilst having access to cctv images of those suspected of the break ins in the early hours of the morning, have advised the victims that nothing can be done due to lack of evidence. éirígí would ask, why the failure to apprehend these individuals, who are known to the community, or even bring them in for questioning? Why should those that purport to protect the community leave the same community to approach éirígí to hopefully bring a resolution to the issue? éirígí activists on the ground have met with certain residents already and given advice. We would argue that what is actually needed here is a community led approach, and not one where the primary aim of certain so called community groups with political intentions is to bring in the PSNI and normalise them with residents as opposed to actually tackling the real issues. Building community action is the way forward.
