Over the next few days, anyone who follows politics is going to be inundated with all sorts of opinions and beliefs about what happened in this election, why it happened, and what it all means. In short, Democrats losing doesn’t mean a whole lot. Every six years typically the party that controls the White House loses seats in Congress. It happened during Reagan, Clinton, Bush and now Obama. As we’ve all seen the last few years, control of the Senate doesn’t matter a great deal as long as Republicans controlled the House. And while controlling both chambers is clearly better than just one, the veto power ultimately lies with the president. It’s extremely difficult to get two-thirds of both the House and the Senate to vote to override a presidential veto. In fact, it’s only happened 110 times in our nation’s history and only 16 have been overridden since 1980 (Reagan 9, George H. Bush 1, Clinton 2, Bush 4, Obama 0). Obama’s zero might look like a positive, but it’s actually not. It shows that during his presidency he’s dealt with a Congress that’s been absolutely incompetent and unwilling to get anything done. It’s maddening considering so many Americans are apparently “dissatisfied” with the president. When someone tells me that they’re not happy with President Obama, what they’re really telling me is that they have no idea how our government works. Immigration is great example. Just over a year ago the Senate passed a bipartisan bill for immigration reform. A bill that President Obama said he would sign into law. But guess what? House Republicans refused to even let it come up for a vote. Now, tell me, whose fault is that? Oh, that’s right, the party that just gained even more power in Congress. I love the “goldfish mentality” of the American voter. Six years ago this nation was on the verge of complete collapse. The result of near complete Republican control during Bush’s presidency. So what did Americans do 6 years later? Gave power right back to the same party that led us head-first into the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression. But make no mistake, Republicans didn’t win this year – Democrats lost. We have a president who’s: Created over 10 million jobs. Authorized the successful killing of Osama bin Ladin. Saved the American auto industry. Presided over record stock levels. Reduced the deficit by $1 trillion. Set a record for consecutive months of job growth in our nation’s history. Passed landmark health care reform that’s provided millions of Americans with health care. And that’s the guy Democrats ran away from. I’m not sure what jackasses controlling the Democratic party decided that they needed to run away from the president, but I hope all their asses are fired. I’ve never been more ashamed to be a Democrat than I was during this election. I’m a fighter; I might lose, but I damn sure won’t lose selling out to fear. I’ll stand by my conviction, what it is I believe in and if I lose, so be it. At the end of the day I lost fighting for my beliefs and staying true to myself. Democrats lost running away from one of the most successful presidents in modern history because they didn’t have the internal fortitude to stand up and fight, proudly informing the American people of all the great things that have been accomplished these last 6 years. If President Obama were a Republican, Americans wouldn’t be “worried about the economy” because Republicans wouldn’t be shutting up about its successes. And perhaps the saddest part of all of this is that most Americans don’t know about most of the achievements of the Obama administration I just listed. And you know why they don’t know about them? Because Democrats are too weak to stand up and proudly profess that yes, we did all of that. There’s no way in hell Republicans wouldn’t stand proudly, even arrogantly, next to one of their presidents if they had created over 10 million jobs (and counting) and they were the Commander-in-Chief who found and authorized the killing of the man responsible for nearly 3,000 deaths and the greatest terrorist attack on our nation’s soil. My God, they would be pushing for a national holiday in his name. Instead, Democrats ran away from him. If these idiots could manage to piece together even one coherent thought to realize something fairly obvious, doing so actually justified their opponents’ propaganda. Because why the hell would any voter that’s torn between two candidates vote for one who essentially agreeing with their opponent’s political rhetoric that the leader of their party has been a failure? Not only that, President Obama is pretty much the most popular person in our government. Even at a 40 percent approval rating his numbers dwarf those of Republicans, Democrats, Harry Reid or John Boehner. In fact, new Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s Gallup favorability rating has hovered between 31 percent in 2010 to 23 percent this year. And it’s like I said to people during this election, when these candidates turned on Obama, it ticked off the Democratic base who are still big fans of the president. Just how the hell were these cowardly Democrats planning to “energize the base” to vote for them, while acting like fools trying to avoid the president’s record that many these voters believed was something these candidates should have been boasting about? One of the many things I’ve learned in my years studying politics is that if a candidate can’t motivate and energize their base during an election, they’re not going to win. And that’s exactly what we saw this year. But the bottom line is, what did Republicans run on? That answer is simple: Absolutely nothing. Which is exactly what they’ve stood for since 2008. So after all this Republican hoopla, and conservatives patting themselves on the back as they celebrate a massive victory for their party, a harsh reality looms for the GOP. A reality that includes a party platform that they didn’t run on. They ran against Obama, not for anything. The truth is, the crap that they stand for isn’t popular among most Americans. As soon as the American people learn more about the true GOP agenda (anti-gay, pro-religion, anti-women’s rights, anti-immigration, anti-Social Security, anti-Medicare, anti-minimum wage, pro-war), the sooner many of these Americans who voted for these Republicans are going to say to themselves, “Just what in the hell did I do?” The bottom line is, Republicans didn’t win big this election year because of their party’s ideology – Democrats lost big because they ran from theirs.
