Over the past 48 hours Ive seen the Russell Brand interview on nearly every persons timeline accompanied by words of endearment and concurrence. I admire what the man stands for, his impassioned delivery and genuine concern for current affairs. My issue though is why would mainstream media give Brand a platform to reiterate what so much of the left have been addressing for years albeit in a very dry and uncharismatic way? If you bypass all the showmanship and verbal pyrotechnics that push people to lionize Brand, youll find everything hes saying is totally safe and in accordance with mainstream leftist dogma. Both the political and corporate elites know that WE the people wont be taking to the streets in a manic protest fueled by Brands ideology hence why its allowed to air. They know we wont leave our jobs, that we wont refuse to pay rent, that we wont refuse to drive our cars, pay our taxes or take to any other form of civil disobedience. Why? Because we as a nation are comfortable, we find radicalism in sharing YouTube videos then carrying on about our day. We have luxury and privilege and that is the sedative for any form of revolution (not anarchy) but revolution. Take away peoples plasma tvs, their clothes, fine wines, cinemas and suspend every football match from now until Christmas and youll see a revolution quicker than you can type it. Capitalism is a powerful machine which we all serve (myself included) with our heads down and for that reason they know that what the Brands of yesterday, today and tomorrow will say wont affect their position in any shape or form. I still think interviews like that are much needed, we just need to take a moment to reflect on the wider issues and ask ourselves if this is just another case of momentary sensationalism.
