Over the weekend, Malala Yousafzai made headlines for choosing to visit Nigeria during her 17th birthday. Malala was shot in the head by the Taliban in her home country of Pakistan for being an advocate for girls education. While Malala was in Nigeria, she met with President Goodluck Jonathan, driving home the point that he needs to meet with the parents of the missing girls. President Jonathan agreed, but today, he canceled the mtg after the parents refused to meet with him. To which Enough is Enough Nigerias Ijeoma Mba writes: While some critics say it is an embarrassment that it took a visit from Yousafzai to put a meeting with the parents on the President’s radar, it does prove that the continued pressure of citizens, civil society groups, and non-governmental organizations is vital to ensure that the government does more to curb terrorism and renew their commitment to bringing back the girls. It must be noted that the government did not pay attention to the growing insurgency and abductions prior to external pressure. Do you think that is why the parents pulled out of the meeting?
