Over the years I have been approached by many North Devon - TopicsExpress

Over the years I have been approached by many North Devon constituents about the ‘financial income requirement’, an obscure part of the immigration rules that requires UK residents to be earning a minimum of £18,600 before their non-EU spouse can come to the UK. The problem is that this applies wherever you are in the UK – which disproportionately affects areas of the country like North Devon as we have much lower than average wages. Indeed, research has shown that almost half of residents in the South West would be unable to sponsor a spouse. People in low income areas are being unfairly penalised and separated from their families. This week therefore I have tabled a Parliamentary motion – EDM 709 – calling on the Government to look again at the rule and reassess the need for a more flexibility in the income threshold. Please ask your MP to sign it: parliament.uk/edm/2014-15/709
