Over the years, my oldest closest bestest friend practiced numerous make-up and hair styles on me. First it was in order to break into fashion and training as a budding make-up artist and hair stylist. Then over the years, new products and trends would be tried first on me. I mentioned going out more in a phone conversation with her just now, when I get back from France next year and she offered to do my hair and make-up. Once my blood pressure dropped to normal levels and the palpitations stopped, I thanked her meekly and politely declined. Suddenly had post-traumatic flashbacks to other times, I was a guinea pig for her “beautification” attempts and shuddered…. Like that ill-fated time she bought a spray tan machine that spluttered and sounded like a wheezy asthmatic pug from hell in its final death throws, which in hindsight didn’t bode well. She spoke of contouring me to accentuate curves etc. The next day, I awoke only to discover that I looked a curious cross between Pepe Le Pew and a weird Zebra/Ronseal subspecies. Then there was the product she promised would give me bee stung lips; it delivered; sort of, only I looked like I had emerged from the aftermath of a violent mutoid hornet attack. Her foray into personal grooming nearly left me with a new wax hymen... The natural no make-up look made me look like Zsa Zsa Gabor (present age) on a hot night out. Her eyebrow treatment left more than a fleeting resemblance to Groucho Marx. A few months ago, she promised natural looking eyelash extensions. Natural and subtle, I suppose if you work in a Ping Pong bar or lap dancing joint and tend to often say ‘Me love you long time’ in a cute lilting lisp… I felt exhausted merely from trying to open my eyes and actually lifting those babies. People kept giving me strange quizzical looks, probably wondering why I had fecking mahoosive spider legs attached to my eyelids. Still, I could have gone down to Vauxhall Tavern and moonlight as a drag queen…
