Overnight on Table mountain - the 3 stooges doing their thing. Who of you Capetonians have slept over on that magical mountain in the caves, and not in the huts. Do you remember Townsends cave? in fact, who remembers Bobby the hermit who lived on that mountain in the 50 s and 60s. Here are some of the more familiar names of one of the more classical routes leading to the back table - Kloof Nek, the Pipe track, the Derrick, Kasteelspoort, the Pines, Springs (the caves were, Bugs, Winitoo, Sad Sack, Cathedral, Jesus cave, Postern...as a result of continued litter, abuse and runaway fires the authorities (CCC) stopped all camping in the caves and was strictly regulated thereafter. If you were a true mountaineer you could join one of the 3 clubs - SAMC, CPMC or the Scouts. These are unforgettable experiences and will probably be etched in ones memory forever...i will try and post a picture of Bobby Townsend later. I have it somewhere as he was a good friend of the Gain family from Walmer Estate. He was a dental Technician and played the violen when he was much younger. He worked for the CCC on the mountain later in his life and just decided to live on the mountain. Rumour has it that he had his heart broken by a women he loved. He is a true Capetonian character. He eventually came down from that mountain at the end of the 60s and died in his late 70s while living with a Miss. Fernandez.
