Ovila Abbey Saison from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Chico, California Sierra Nevadas Ovila® Abbey Ales series is a collaboration with the monks of the Abbey of New Clairvaux in Vina, CA. Each beer is a modern twist on a traditional Belgian-style abbey ale—monastic inspiration and American innovation. These rotating Ovila Abbey Ales highlight, when possible, local ingredients grown and harvested by the monks on their nearly 600-acre working farm. We hope you enjoy these one-of-a-kind collaboration ales. Heres what the Sierra Nevada website has to say about this beer: Ovila® Abbey Saison with Mandarin Oranges and Peppercorns - Complex yet rustic farmhouse ale. An homage to the monks’ noble work, this unique farmhouse ale is incredibly complex with notes of lemon, pepper, straw and herbs balanced by the tang of Mandarin oranges and a spicy kick of pepper. The Mandarin oranges used to make this beer were locally grown, including a portion grown on the grounds of the Abbey of New Clairvaux and picked by hand by the community of monks living there. We hope you enjoy this collaboration ale. Overview - 7.5% ABV --- 24 IBUs - Ingredients - Yeast Belgian yeast --- Bittering Hops Summit --- Finishing Hops Styrian Golding, El Dorado, Mandarina Bavaria --- Malts Estate grown two-row Pale, Wheat, Caramel --- Other Mandarin Orange and Peppercorn So what we have here is a Saison brewed with mandarin oranges and peppercorns. My single is a 12.7 ounce bottle with a corked and caged enclosure - something you dont see too often. Im really enjoying this combination of oranges and peppercorns - tangy sweet and spicy at the same time. This is a very interesting beer. It pours bright golden with fizzy foam that disappears quickly. The fruitiness is really nice here, and I am not usually a big fan of fruity beers, but this one is done right. This is most excellent and well worth a try if you can find. Im not positive, but I think I grabbed this at Calandros in Baton Rouge. I think it might also be available at Cannatas in Houma, Louisiana.
