Owner Pleads Guilty to Abandoning His Elderly, Three-legged Dog: Violet Was Found Tied to A Trash Can After Her Owner Moved Away HYDE PARK, NY (August 13, 2014 Hyde Park, NY) – Jonathan Ell plead guilty in City of Beacon Court on July 23rd to one count of Abandonment of Animals. The charge came after Mr. Ell abandoned his elderly dog, Violet, during a winter storm. On March 12, 2014, DCSPCA Humane Law Enforcement Officer Rich Eckert was called to Mr. Ells’ home in Beacon by a neighbor who had found Violet tied to a garbage can. The neighbor brought Violet out of the freezing rain. During our investigation we learned that Mr. Ell had moved out of his home earlier that day. Violet was so weak, Officer McNamee had to carry her into the shelter in Hyde Park. Violet is a 15-year old Blue Merle Australian Shepherd who had lost one of her legs to cancer prior to being abandoned. She has tumors throughout her body. The DCSPCA placed Violet in a foster home and continues to monitor her health and receive updates on her care. She was adopted by her foster family. Mr. Ell agrees not to purchase, own, possess, care for, or share custody of any casts, dogs, ferrets, gerbils, hamsters or other household pets for the next year. He is subject to periodic checks by the Dutchess County SPCA and would be re-sentenced if he is found to be in violation of the conditional discharge.
