Owner of Bath Subaru Takes a Stand against Times Record Misinformation in Bear Baiting Editorial Bruce Mcelman, owner of Bath Subaru was so outraged by the misinformation and bias nature of the recent Times Record Editorial titled, Bear Baiting he cancelled his advertising agreement with the left leaning paper worth $30,000.00. The visibly angry Mr. Mcelman was not outraged because the Times Record took a position for the referendum, he was angry with the misinformation and blatantly false statements by the paper. According to the Times record editorial, Bears are needed to keep the deer and wild boar population in check; bears will dispatch sick deer and excess feral pigs, keeping their herds healthy. Maine has no feral pig population! In addition, there are some regions of Maine where bear populations are highest that have as few as 1 to 5 deer per square mile. Wildlife managers and communities across Maine are trying desperately to restore the nearly 200 million per year deer hunting industry and the Times Record is oblivious to the problem and advocates more bear predation on deer? Obviously, if the Times Record doesnt know there are no feral pigs in Maine, it is proof they know nothing about managing other wildlife like bears and the public should ignore them said SAM Executive Director, David Trahan. It appears the paper doesnt care or know anything about the plight of rural Maine and this editorial look likes it was written by someone living in Montana, not Maine he added. The authors claim of dogs tearing apart bears appears to come right from the talking points of the Humane Society of the United States. What is extremely frustrating is this newspaper did a similar editorial last year, encouraging voters to vote last November to end baiting- a year prior to the actual vote; as a result, they appear more like an uninformed mouthpiece for the pro-referendum forces than journalists. Bruce Mcelman has shown great courage by pulling his advertising money from this hostile paper. We applaud him! As sportsmen and women, the only power we have is to demand fairness through our pocket book. We are hundreds of thousands strong if you get a chance, thank them. For the Times Record-the only options sportsmen have is to demand fairness and act with our wallet.
