OxFam Hunger Banquet = Powerful. 50 of us Randomly divided into Class. And given a role to play; all based on real people. My role for the evening was as 27 yr old Farah from Jordan who left her engineering job to volunteer at refugee camp. Seated at a table. Given water and hot tea. No one else served. Unfair feelings wafted over. Offered tea to whomever wished to share while asking them to share their Story; Charles goat had just died, family struggling to purchase another to sustain. OxFam volunteers (University students) shared Real Stories of whats happening in Syria; various students selected to change their roles from Middle to Low Class & Low to Middle to demonstrate how fragile our Situations truly can be at any given moment. A High Class mothers life experience was compared to a Low Class; both had Masters degrees now stay at home Moms vs. the Mom living in Demascus dealth with daily violence, loss of income & uncertainty. Dinner served. High Class: salad with cheese, pecans and apple slices. Followed by pasta with meat. Middle Class: rice & beans Low Class: Rice Not sure if I broke the rules: I chose to divide my salad in two and asked various people/groups if anyone would like to share my salad with me. Shared with a woman in the refugee camp who had been a student. Shared meat and 1/3 pasta with a group who passed it round with each other. Cake, ate 1/3, shared the rest with Charles. At the end of the Banquet we shared our thoughts, feelings, impressions. Incredibly powerful. Spoke about actions we could take to make a difference. No sense feeling guilty about where you were born; but of taking ACTION if so inspired. Truly and Deeply Inspired by these KU college students who are so passionate about doing what they can to bring awareness to Hunger. Thank you to Meg for inviting me!
